Sex vs Porn

In honor of NOPORNOVEMBER ending this week, I decided to write about pornography. According to the Advance English Dictionary, porn is defined as “creative activity (writing or pictures or films etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire.” Most people think of videos when they think of porn, videos of people having sex.

That would make it seem like porn and sex are the same. However, that is not the case. In sex you are engaged in the activity. In pornography, you are watching others. When we are not involved in the activity, we have a tendency to objectify others.

Porn is more than just sex. It’s a performance. A performance filled with unrealistic expectations that tend to distort perceptions of reality. There are more differences, but some of them depend on how you perceive sex. Is sex purely a physically activity to be done with anyone or something that is about a connection? If you believe in sex connecting us, then it’s important to know that porn can ruin our ability to be connected in multiple ways: arousal, performance, emotional connection, etc.

There is so much more to the difference between the two. One is reality and one is a fantasy. People too often get lost in this reality since it can seem so real. That is damaging so many people. There’s science out there about this. I hope to present it to you in the near future.
